Swedish International Centre of Education for Sustainable Development at Uppsala University has the mandate to support Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through capacity development, research and policy development.
We wish to integrate the values and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of teaching and learning. Therefore SWEDESD, together with partners in Sweden and abroad, designs and implements educational, informational and training programmes and activities to strengthen the capacity of practitioners, policy makers and researchers in formal- and informal educational settings.
SWEDESD works within the frameworks of Sweden’s policy for global development, the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD). It receives it´s core funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and works with organisations operating in countries that are part of Swedish international development cooperation policy.
Since July 2013, SWEDESD is part of Uppsala University’s Faculty of Educational Sciences. It has working relationships with other university units, such as the Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD), CEMUS, the Baltic University Program (BUP), The Swedish Biodiversity Centre (CBM) and the Nordic Africa Institute. SWEDESD also collaborates with the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO, and Swedish and international organisations that are associated with ESD.
